Professor Rosita Igwe, a distinguished scholar in Curriculum and Pedagogy at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has called for an immediate reevaluation of the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS). Her recommendation emphasizes competencies and specialized expertise to enhance educational quality.

Additionally, Prof. Igwe proposes the establishment of dedicated Departments of Curriculum Development within Ministries of Education at both state and federal levels. These departments would facilitate training for curriculum managers and other stakeholders in the education sector.

These recommendations were part of Prof. Igwe’s 23rd Inaugural Lecture during the 2023/2024 Academic Session at UNILAG. Titled “No Curriculum, No Education: Demystifying and Deconstructing the Myth,” the lecture underscored the pivotal role of curriculum in shaping educational outcomes. Prof. Igwe emphasized the need for stakeholders involved in curriculum formulation and reforms to stay informed about evolving trends. A robust and effective curriculum system, she argued, is essential for training efficient manpower and driving holistic development in education.

During her lecture, Prof. Igwe re-conceptualized the curriculum, highlighting its indispensability in educational development. She urged government authorities at all levels to leverage existing expertise in curriculum design and execution. Furthermore, she called upon the National Universities Commission (NUC) to prioritize the establishment of curriculum and research centers within universities. These centers would facilitate research, updates, and guidance on various curriculum-related matters.

    Born in September 1954 in Owerri, Imo State, Prof. Rosita Igwe earned her degrees from the University of Lagos between 1982 and 1994, culminating in her Ph.D. in Curriculum Studies (Curriculum Theory). Her academic journey led her from Lecturer II in 1998 to her current position as a Professor of Curriculum and Pedagogy since 2018.
