In a remarkable contribution to Yoruba linguistics, Professor Oladiipo Ajiboye of the Department of Linguistics, African and Asian Studies at the University of Lagos unveiled his latest book, New Horizons in Yoruba Grammar, on Thursday, September 19, 2024. The book, published by Kingdom Arts Publishing, provides a comprehensive and innovative analysis of the complexities of Yoruba grammar, incorporating 75% of Professor Ajiboye's research over the years.
During the launch event, Professor Ajiboye shared the motivation for his work, tracing it back to his early academic career at the University of Ilorin in 1995. He recounted how a colleague’s advice to “publish or perish” inspired him to focus on research and writing, ultimately leading to this landmark publication. The 409-page book integrates various theoretical frameworks, including optimality theory, generative phonology, and the minimalist programme, making it a substantial academic resource.

The book was reviewed by Dr. Simeon Olaogun from Adekunle Ajasin University, who praised it for offering a broader perspective on Yoruba linguistics compared to previous works. He emphasized that New Horizons covers phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and orthography, making it the most extensive Yoruba grammar treatise to date. Dr. Olaogun highlighted the book’s challenge to conventional beliefs, including a proposal for nine oral vowels and three nasal vowels in Yoruba, diverging from the traditional seven and five.
