The University of Lagos has signed a Memorandum of understanding with two prominent French institutions to strengthen ties between Nigeria and France in education, research and cultural exchange.

The University of Lagos has taken a significant step by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with two prominent French institutions: the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) and the French Cultural Centre, Allianz Francaise. This collaborative effort aims to strengthen ties between France and Nigeria in the fields of education, research, and cultural exchange.

During the signing ceremony, which took place at the Senate House of the University of Lagos on February 23, 2024, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, welcomed the Consul-General of France to Nigeria, Mr. Laurent Favier, along with a delegation of diplomats and representatives from the French institutions. The gathering emphasized the importance of fostering deeper connections between the two nations.

Accompanying Professor Ogunsola were other key university officials, including:

The Head of the French mission in Nigeria, who was visiting the University for the first time, expressed sincere appreciation for the invitation and the successful collaboration with Nigeria’s premier learning institution. He commended the University’s leadership on two significant fronts:

  1. African-European Partnership: The University’s participation in this partnership signifies a bridge between the continents, focusing on higher education, cultural diversity, and scientific research.
  2. Allianz Francaise Extension: The establishment of an extension of Allianz Francaise within the University will promote French language and culture.

The leader of the French delegation assured that this partnership would pave the way for more international collaborations, fostering academic excellence and innovation with other French institutions. Additionally, the IRD regional representative, Mr. Ndam Nicaise, highlighted the role of the French public research organization in achieving equitable partnerships with countries and aligning priorities with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Overall, this collaboration represents a remarkable narrative, opening a new chapter in the bilateral relationship between the University of Lagos and the French government.
