The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) proudly announces the appointment of Professor Abosede R. Omowumi Babatunde as its first Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies. This milestone not only marks a significant achievement for the university but also establishes her as the first female professor in this field at the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, UNILORIN.

Prof. Babatunde holds both a Master’s degree and a PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, where she was recognized as the best graduating student in her Master’s cohort. She also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the same institution.

Throughout her academic career, Professor Babatunde has been honored with several distinguished fellowships. Notable among these are the African Humanities Postdoctoral Fellowship (2010) and the American Council of Learned Societies Research Fellowship in Peace Studies (2013) at the University of Calgary, Canada. Additionally, she was a Fellow at the Rachel Carson Centre for Environment and Society at Ludwig-Maximilians University, Germany, in 2017/18 and a Guest Researcher at the Nordic Africa Institute, Sweden, in 2019. Recently, she was appointed as the 2023 Landhaus Fellow at the same German institution and will serve as the 2024 Afox Visiting Research Fellow at Merton College, University of Oxford.

Professor Babatunde's influence extends beyond academia. She is a former member of the Governing Council of the International Peace Research Association (IPRA) and actively participates in several academic and professional organizations, including the Society for Peace Studies and Practice, the African Studies Association, and the American Political Science Association (APSA).
