The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, (UNILORIN) Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has emphasized the need for unified efforts across the nation to combat the scourge of malaria in Nigeria. Prof. Egbewole made these remarks during a visit from the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) team on July 2, 2024. Led by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Olubunmi Abayomi Omotesho, the Vice Chancellor highlighted the severe economic burden imposed by malaria, including increased healthcare costs and diminished productivity.

The NMEP team, represented by Mr Omo-Eboh Mamudu from the Federal Ministry of Health, discussed ongoing efforts in Kwara State to study mosquito behavior—a critical step in developing effective malaria control strategies. This initiative is part of the New Net Project aimed at ultimately eradicating malaria nationwide.

Acknowledging the government's commitment, Prof. Egbewole affirmed the University's readiness to support the study, emphasizing accountability in resource utilization: "As a university, we are committed to ensuring that every investment in this study yields significant results."

The collaboration between the University of Ilorin and various health institutions underscores a collective approach to achieving a malaria-free Nigeria. Prof. Suleiman Folorunsho Ambali, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), and Prof. A. T. Ande of the Department of Zoology were also present to receive the NMEP team, showcasing the University's dedication to national health initiatives.
