The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) is set to celebrate its Golden Jubilee from November 23 to 28, 2025, as announced by Vice-Chancellor Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN. The decision follows a detailed presentation of the event's activities to the Principal Officers on July 19, 2024, at the Vice-Chancellor’s Committee Room.

The 50th anniversary will be a significant milestone for the University, established in August 1975 by a decree from the Federal Military Government. This initiative aimed to broaden educational opportunities and contribute to Nigeria’s development through a highly skilled workforce.

Over the past five decades, UNILORIN has grown from a modest institution into one of Nigeria's premier universities, known for its academic excellence, innovative research, and community service. Founded as a University College affiliated with the University of Ibadan, UNILORIN achieved autonomy in 1977 with Professor O. O. Akinkugbe as its first Vice-Chancellor. The institution initially started with 200 students and 615 staff members across three Faculties. Today, it accommodates 50,883 students and is supported by 3,625 staff members.

UNILORIN’s notable alumni include prominent figures such as Prof. Is-haq Olanrewaju Oloyede, Registrar of JAMB; Prof. Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja; Dr. Salamat Ahuoiza Aliu, West Africa’s first female neurosurgeon; and several other distinguished leaders in various fields.
