UNIMAID VC Matriculates 6,553 Students, Issues Stern Warning Against Social Vices

The Vice-Chancellor University of Maiduguri, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, on Tuesday the 10th March, 2026 formally admitted 6,553 students into the institution for the 2025/2026 academic session, with a stern warning against social media abuse, drug addiction, and other social vices.

Speaking at the University’s 44th Matriculation Ceremony held at the Convocation Square, Professor Mele disclosed that the new intakes were drawn from the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Direct Entry (DE), and the University’s Remedial Arts and Science programmes.

The Vice-Chancellor described the ceremony as a transition from "aspirants to ambassadors," noting that the University has remained a resilient center of knowledge despite challenges of funding and infrastructure.

He urged the students to emulate the courage of the distinguished men and women who passed through the hallowed chambers of the institution before them.

“You are becoming part of a community of scholars, thinkers, and future leaders. In the years ahead, you will encounter new ideas and challenges that will help you grow academically and as responsible individuals,” the VC stated.

Professor Mele emphasized a "zero-tolerance" policy for misconduct, specifically highlighting the dangers of modern distractions. He then warned that the University would not hesitate to expel and prosecute any student found guilty of examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, or the misuse of social media platforms to threaten campus peace.

“Discipline is the foundation of success. There will be many temptations and shortcuts along the way, but remember that true academic success must be earned. Your character will define you even more than your academic results,” he added.

The Registrar, Ahmad Alhaji Lawan, who administered the matriculation oath to the students, reaffirmed the University’s commitment to providing a conducive learning environment and robust support services. He then congratulated the new students and wished them success in their academic pursuits.
