UNIUYO Don Urges Government to Fund Medicinal Plant Research

Professor Bassey Antia, an Organic Chemistry professor at the University of Uyo, has urged the Nigerian government to fund research into medicinal plants. Speaking during the university’s 105th inaugural lecture, Antia emphasized that such research could lead to the development of standardized plant-based medicines to treat various ailments.

University of Uyo, Organic Chemistry professor, Bassey Antia, has called on the government to provide funding for research into medicinal plants in Nigeria. The professor made this plea during the 105th inaugural lecture of the university, titled “Natural Products Chemistry: Where the Mysteries of the Natural World Manifest in Atoms, Molecules, and Ions.”

Antia highlighted that medicinal plants hold significant potential in improving the health and well-being of Nigerians. He emphasized that government support could lead to the production of standardized plant-based medicines capable of curing various ailments.

"Government or its agencies should invest in research on our medicinal plants, as this could lead to the development of verified plant medicines," Antia stated, adding that such research could enhance the therapeutic options available in the country.

The professor also advocated for the provision of advanced research facilities in universities and the training of scientists to explore natural products in the local environment.
