UNIZIK Set to Host 20th South East University Games

The Vice Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Professor Charles Okechukwu Esimone (FAS) and Nnamdi Azikiwe University Sports Committee, has announced that the university would be hosting the 20th edition of the South East University Games tagged 'UNIZIK 2023' from 19th to 26th November, 2023.

UNIZIK Set to Host 20th South East University Games

The Vice Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Professor Charles Okechukwu Esimone (FAS) and Nnamdi Azikiwe University Sports Committee, has announced that the university would be hosting the 20th edition of the South East University Games tagged 'UNIZIK 2023' from 19th to 26th November, 2023.

What is South East University Games?

 

South East University Games is a University games set for universities in Eastern Nigeria. Its proprietary body is South East University Games Association (SEUGA). SEUGA is an affiliate of National University Games Association (NUGA). The aim of South East University Games is to kick-start a University games that will offer a recognized sports engagement for Eastern Universities, creating an avenue for schools to tap into the potentials of sports for projection, improving linkages and attracting investors and students. SEUGA held its maiden Games in 2002 and was hosted by Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Since then, reputable universities including University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) Abia State University (ABSU) and AE-FUNAI University Ebonyi have all hosted the games. Its twentieth year edition has once again returned to Nnamdi Azikiwe University and is tagged UNIZIK 2023.

 

UNIZIK 2023

 

'UNIZIK 2023' will bring together Federal, State and Private Universities situated in South East Nigeria for an 8-day Olympic-style competition. With full participation, it is expected to host over two thousand athletes from twenty-five schools who will compete in twenty-six different sporting activities. No less than ten thousand people will be at the games which will be transmitted live to participating schools through their social media live stream. Games at the competition include:

'UNIZIK 2023: LOC

 

UNIZIK 2023 local organizing committee is chaired by Dr. Emeka Okeke, a sports oriented philanthropist who is also the chairman of Aspire FC Foundation and Aspire Football Club. It is co-chaired by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Professor Joseph Ikecheblu. The secretary of the LOC is Dr. Derek Orji while other notable members include Mr. Ogbonna Kenneth, Dr. Iyke Nwokedi, Professor Nonso Achebe, Barr. Philomena Okoye and Mrs. Gladys Chika Eneh. Others are Barr. Patrick Onyedum, Professor Lasbrey Asomugha, Mr. Gozie Egwuatu, Mr. Emeka Ogbu, Engineer Iyke Onwuemene, Dr. Gideon Emeghara, Mr. Ken Chukwurah, Mr. Okoye Maduka, Engr. Participation

 

UNIZIK 2023 is open to all public and private universities in the South East. Details of registration will be conveyed via a letter of invitation to universities as well as a general notice that will be published here on our website. Facilities

 

To host a unique, high-profile competition such as the South East University Games, Nnamdi Azikiwe University will be deploying a new mini-stadium currently undergoing construction. Also, three basketball courts, two handball courts, two volleyball courts and two lawn tennis courts will be upgraded to meet the standards for the games. Arrangements for accommodation for visiting athletes and their coaches is underway to ensure a memorable events for every participant.

 

Alumni support for various schools

While participating universities are expected to sponsor their athletes to the competition, there is a commiserate call for school alumni or other well meaning individuals or brands to adopt and sponsor schools for the event to lessen the burden on schools.
