The Dean of student affairs of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Professor Edwin O. Omeje, has debunked the rumours of unfair and illegal hostel allocation process in the institution.
In an interview with our correspondent on Wednesday, September 7, 2023, Omeje said that there was no racketeering or corruption involved in the allocation of hostels to students, and that the process was transparent and fair.

He said that the glitches experienced by some students during the online application for hostels were due to the high traffic on the website, and not because of any manipulation or sabotage.
He explained that the hostels were built between 1960 and 1963 to accommodate the population of students at that time, which was 220, compared to the current population of over 65,000 students.

He said that the university was working on building new hostels and bed spaces to cater for more students, and appealed for patience and understanding from the students.
He also revealed the hostel allocation template, which showed that 40% of the hostels were reserved for first year students, 20% for final year students, 20% for other years, 10% for staff children, 5% for management staff, and 5% for friends of the university.
He assured the students that “nothing is hidden” in the hostel allocation process, and that the university had the interest of all the students at heart.
