The Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, has commissioned a solar-powered electricity and Wi-Fi facility for the Department of English and Literature as part of efforts to strengthen teaching, learning, research and digital innovation.

The facility, commissioned on Friday, July 3, 2026, is located in the Faculty of Arts and is expected to provide uninterrupted power supply and improved internet connectivity to enhance academic activities and research productivity within the department.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the Head of the Department of English and Literature, Roseann Chinwe Ezeifeka, thanked the Vice-Chancellor for his continued support for the department and the university.

She said the installation of the solar-powered electricity and Wi-Fi facility would improve access to digital resources, facilitate research and enhance teaching and learning.

He appealed to the university management to rehabilitate the road leading to the faculty's mini market, popularly known as "Bamboo," noting that its poor condition has posed challenges for staff, students and visitors.

Responding, Professor Anyaehie commended the Department of English and Literature for its cordial relationship with the university administration and described its staff as dedicated and committed to the institution's growth.

He noted that, as a federal university that does not charge tuition fees, UNIZIK continues to face significant financial demands amid increasing infrastructural needs. He therefore encouraged faculties, departments and other stakeholders to embrace innovation, collaboration and internally generated initiatives to complement government funding.

The Vice-Chancellor urged members of the university community to remain focused on productive engagements, stressing that collective responsibility is essential for sustainable institutional development.

He further disclosed that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) had indicated its readiness to support the expansion and upgrading of the university's solar power infrastructure through ongoing intervention projects and expressed hope that implementation would be expedited.

Reiterating his leadership philosophy, Professor Anyaehie said he believes more in action than complaints, adding that resilience, commitment and consistent effort remain vital to advancing the university.

On the request to rehabilitate the road leading to the Bamboo mini market, the Vice-Chancellor observed that the area serves commercial purposes and suggested that users of the business premises should also contribute to its maintenance.

He, however, directed the Director of Works and Services to assess the road and take appropriate steps to address the challenge.

The Vice-Chancellor later formally commissioned the solar-powered electricity and Wi-Fi facility, describing the project as another milestone in UNIZIK's efforts to expand digital infrastructure, promote sustainable energy solutions and provide a more conducive environment for teaching, learning and research.
