Usmanu Danfodiyo University Students Outline Expectations from Incoming Vice-Chancellor

As Professor Bashir Garba MFR prepares to assume office as the 10th Vice-Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, on September 1, 2024, students residing in on-campus hostels have voiced their hopes and expectations for his tenure.

One of the most pressing issues raised by the students is the inadequate water supply in the hostels, particularly at the Jibril Aminu Hall of Residence, which houses thousands of students. Currently, water is pumped only once or twice a day, leading to significant challenges for the occupants. Students are calling for a more consistent water supply schedule, suggesting that water be pumped at 6 a.m., 2 p.m., and 6 p.m. daily to ensure sufficient availability.

In addition to water issues, students have expressed concerns about the poor state of hostel facilities. Many bathrooms in the hostels lack doors, forcing students to wait their turn to use them. Although some toilet doors were recently fixed, students feel more needs to be done to maintain cleanliness and accessibility.

Health concerns have also been highlighted, with students reporting frequent illnesses such as fever, typhoid, and mosquito bites during the rainy season. The university clinic, however, often lacks the necessary medication and injections to treat these ailments, forcing students to either purchase the drugs themselves or return the next day.

Moreover, students have pointed out that some blocks in the halls of residence, particularly on the upper floors, have leaking roofs during the rainy season, leaving students to manage the situation on their own.
