The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Professor Babatunde Kehinde, has called on Farm Practical Year (FPY) students to embrace innovation and technology in agriculture as they embark on their academic journey. Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development, Professor Kola Adebayo, the Vice-Chancellor delivered this message during the 2024/2025 Academic Session Orientation Programme for FPY students, organized by the Centre for Community-Based Farming Scheme (COBFAS).
In his opening remarks, Professor Kehinde commended the students for choosing a path in agriculture and reflected on his own experience as a student, emphasizing how the FPY Programme had shaped his career. He highlighted that the programme is designed to equip students with the skills needed to manage both small- and large-scale agricultural enterprises. He encouraged the students to integrate technological innovations into their farming practices, noting the crucial role they would play in the future of agriculture.
"The future of agriculture lies in innovation. You must embrace technology and creativity to address the challenges in the sector," the Vice-Chancellor stated, urging the students to be proactive and committed as they represent FUNAAB during their FPY journey.
Dr. Shakirat Ibrahim, Acting Director of COBFAS, delivered a detailed lecture titled “Overview of the FPY Programme, Course Titles, Codes, Credit Units, and Enterprise”. She outlined the structure and objectives of the one-year programme, which spans 22 courses aimed at fostering sustainable agricultural practices. Students will gain hands-on experience in crop production, animal husbandry, and other agricultural enterprises. Dr. Ibrahim emphasized the importance of maintaining farm diaries and logbooks, as well as adhering to the grading system, as part of the programme’s practical and academic components.
In another lecture titled “Rules and Regulations Governing FPY Programme and Expectations of COBFAS”, Deputy Director of Farms, Mr. Olugbenga Fashina, addressed the students as "Great farmers" and emphasized the critical role of agriculture with the phrase, “No farmer, no nation.” He highlighted the rewarding aspects of the FPY, such as learning to operate farm equipment like tractors, and stressed the importance of following the programme's rules, including proper dress code, punctuality, and respectful interactions with staff. He added that students would have the opportunity to sell their produce at competitive prices, contributing back to the university.
Other speakers at the orientation included Mrs. Olubukola Fasae, who provided insights into poultry management and conduct on the farm; Dr. Oyelekan Nasir, representing the Acting Director of Health Services, who gave a presentation on health tips; and Mr. Ayelabola Adeogun, representing the Assistant Chief Environmental Officer, who discussed security and related issues.
