In celebration of the 2024 United Nations World Tourism Day, the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) emphasized its commitment to fostering professionalism in tourism and promoting a sustainable blue economy. The event took place at the college's Tourism Village in Epe, in collaboration with the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) South West Zone, under the theme "Tourism and Peace."

Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Funsho Afolabi, highlighted the significance of the celebration, stating, "By hosting this event, we have established a platform for intellectual discourse and engaging activities like exhibitions, cultural displays, parades, entertainment, and interactive sessions." He reiterated the positive connection between tourism and peace, aligning with the federal government's "Renewed Hope Agenda."

Prof. Afolabi noted that the World Tourism Organisation's focus on "Tourism and Peace" aligns with President Bola Tinubu's vision for sustainable development. He explained that YABATECH's Department of Tourism Management Technology (TMT) plays a pivotal role in advancing these initiatives, particularly in educating future tourism professionals.

In his address, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, Rector of YABATECH, emphasized that World Tourism Day celebrates the beauty of the planet and the diverse cultures that inhabit it. He stressed tourism's role in fostering understanding, peace, and international cooperation. "Tourism is not just about visiting new places; it’s an opportunity to immerse in the traditions and stories of people from different walks of life," he stated.

Dr. Oluwatoyin Adedayo, Head of the TMT Department, echoed these sentiments, urging participants to reflect on tourism's potential to promote peace and mutual respect. She reaffirmed the department's commitment to nurturing the next generation of tourism professionals who will shape the industry's future in Nigeria and beyond.

Chief Folorunsho Coker, Director General of NTDA, represented by Deputy Zonal Coordinator Mrs. Alice Adesola, underscored tourism's critical role in national development. She encouraged students to consider tourism as a lucrative profession, stating, "Tourism is life. It encompasses our way of life, culture, and traditions."

As YABATECH continues to champion sustainable tourism practices, the celebration of World Tourism Day serves as a reminder of the industry's potential to contribute to economic growth and cultural exchange while promoting peace and sustainability in Nigeria.
