16-Year-Old Kelisha Williams Triumphs Over Challenges, Secures Full Scholarship to Harvard University

In a remarkable feat of determination and academic excellence, 16-year-old Kelisha Williams from Ohio has been awarded a full scholarship to Harvard University, where she is set to embark on a journey to study Political Science.

Kelisha's journey has been marked by resilience, having experienced multiple transitions within foster care in less than two years. Her search for stability led her to the care of Maria Finkenstead, who runs Specialized Alternatives for Families & Youth (SAFY). Kelisha described Maria as the most easy-going parent she has had, creating a safe haven for her.

Juggling work and school responsibilities, Kelisha's academic prowess caught the attention of Maria Finkenstead, who inquired about her ACT scores. Kelisha scored an impressive 32 on the American College Test (ACT), opening doors for her to pursue higher education at renowned institutions.

Setting her sights on Ivy League schools, including her dream school, the University of Southern California, Kelisha applied to 24 schools in total, Harvard included. She candidly admitted that applying to Harvard initially seemed like a joke, but her exceptional achievements made it a reality.

During the Harvard application process, Kelisha faced unique requirements, including an admissions interview involving conversations with Lin Manuel Miranda and Former First Lady Michelle Obama. Michelle Obama's words, "You just have to keep going. No one’s ever fully always on your side," resonated with Kelisha, providing the motivation to persevere.

The moment of truth arrived when Kelisha checked her application status, witnessing a burst of confetti across the screen with the words "Congratulations." Overwhelmed with joy, Kelisha shared her emotional journey, expressing gratitude to those who supported her.

Heading to Harvard on a full-ride scholarship to pursue studies in political science and psychology, Kelisha aims to inspire other foster children facing obstacles similar to hers. Her story serves as a beacon of hope, emphasizing that despite challenges, perseverance can lead to remarkable achievements.

Kelisha's foster mom, Maria Finkenstead, acknowledged Kelisha's determination, stating, "All the determination has come from her. I take no credit in any of her accomplishments." Kelisha's achievements underscore the transformative power of education and the potential for individuals to overcome adversity with resilience and a supportive community.
