Participants at the ongoing Umoja African Student Leaders Network Summit/UNILAG Mandela Week were guests of the Lagos State House of Assembly Complex in Alausa, Ikeja, on Thursday, July 20, 2023.

Their visit to the parliamentary complex was part of activities marking Day 4 of the 2023 Umoja Summit/UNILAG Mandela Week which is being hosted by the University of Lagos.

The delegates’ mission at the Lagos assembly complex was to learn about legislative processes and activities.

Though the Lagos State House of Assembly was said to be on recess, the student-leaders were hosted at the gallery of the parliamentary complex which gave them an overview of the Hallow Chamber where the Lagos State parliamentarians converge for law making.

They were addressed by the Head, Parliamentary Education Unit; Mr Kolapo Wasiu who spoke on different stages of law making, processes and a variety of issues as it relates to parliamentary involvement in the formulation of various governmental policies.

The Umoja delegates were also addressed by the Clerk of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Olalekan Onafeko who took them down memory lane as well as some key achievements of the Lagos State parliament.

The participants who are student-leaders from various universities across Africa including UNILAG were visibly excited to meet Nigerian movie actor, director and politician who currently represents Surulere Constituency in the Lagos parliament, Honourable Desmond Elliot.

Hon. Elliot who met the Umoja delegates at the Lagos Parliamentary Library also briefed them on the indispensability of lawmakers in democracy.

The Umoja delegates were allotted copies of the History of the Lagos State House of Assembly as parting gifts.

Later in the evening on Thursday, July 20, 2023, action shifted to the Julius Berger Hall of the University of Lagos where the delegated were treated to a Cultural performance session courtesy of the Black Edge Production Group led by Dr. Oluwatoyin Olokodana-James of the Department of Creative Arts, UNILAG.

The dance performances afforded the delegates a closer experience of the different indigenous cultures in Nigeria. They were also at the UNILAG M.A.D. House for a feel of fine arts as exhibited by students of the Department of Creative Arts, UNILAG.
