Elmo Desilva, a 45-year-old African American man from Clarkston, Georgia, has recently achieved a significant milestone by graduating from DeKalb County High School. Desilva had been working as a custodian at the school, and his dream of becoming the head custodian hinged on obtaining a high school diploma.
Desilva's journey to graduation was marked by numerous challenges during his teenage years. He faced an unstable living situation with parents who were often absent, leading to his inability to complete his high school education. Instead, he shouldered the responsibilities of caring for his younger siblings, postponing his own educational aspirations.
"It wasn't easy. It was a struggle for a while. But looking back, I am very proud," Desilva reflected on his challenging past. He elaborated on his situation, explaining, "I had to make money to put food on the table and clothes on their backs as a young teenager. It just pulled me out of school."
Despite these hardships, Desilva found hope while working as a custodian at DeKalb County High School. His potential was recognized by the school's principal, Stephanie Brown-Bryant, who saw an opportunity to support his educational journey. Brown-Bryant guided Desilva to enroll in the DeKalb County Adult Education Program, paving the way for his high school diploma pursuit.
"By having our staff members equipped with educational opportunities, it lends itself to growth. Not just for them but for our school," Brown-Bryant emphasized. After attending night classes twice a week for nearly six months, Desilva achieved his high school diploma. He was among the 46 adults honored at a graduation ceremony organized by the school district.
"I hate to fail at something. I didn't want to start and not finish. I didn't want to disappoint my boss," Desilva shared, emphasizing his determination and commitment to his educational journey.

With his high school diploma now in hand, Desilva is on the cusp of fulfilling his aspiration to be promoted to head custodian.
