519 Graduate with First-Class as FUTA Hosts Combined 34th and 35th Convocation
The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), is set to graduate over 6,500 students during its combined 34th and 35th convocation ceremonies, scheduled for November 29 and 30, 2024.
The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), is set to graduate over 6,500 students during its combined 34th and 35th convocation ceremonies, scheduled for November 29 and 30, 2024. The ceremonies will mark the culmination of the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions and will be presided over by the Chancellor, the Emir of Katagum, HRH Alhaji Umar Farouk II.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji revealed during a press briefing on November 22 that 519 students will graduate with first-class honors, while 3,408 will graduate with second-class upper degrees, 2,139 with second-class lower, and 339 with third-class degrees. Additionally, 1,280 postgraduate students will receive diplomas, master’s, and doctoral degrees.
The institution will honor three valedictorians for their academic excellence: Ifeoluwa Faromika and Johnbull Vitowanu (2022/2023), both achieving a CGPA of 4.96, and Oluwasegun Ajakaye (2023/2024) with a CGPA of 4.95.
As part of the week-long celebration, a convocation lecture titled "Technological Innovations: A Panacea for Food Insecurity" will be delivered by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. The university will also confer honorary doctorate degrees on three distinguished individuals for their societal contributions: Professor Daniel Kolawole Olukoya, Mr. Joel Ogunsola, and Mr. Ayorinde Olurinde Ogunruku.
Three professors will receive the title of Emeritus Professors in recognition of their academic contributions: Professor Adebisi Balogun, Professor (Venerable) Akin Laseinde, and Professor Labunmi Lajide.
Highlighting FUTA’s achievements, Professor Oladiji noted the university’s global recognition, including its CanSat team ranking among the top five in an international space competition and its faculty members being listed among the world’s top 2% of scientists. She also announced full accreditation of 18 academic programs by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed FUTA’s standing as Nigeria’s leading university of technology, emphasizing her commitment to advancing the institution’s teaching, research, and community service. Adequate security and logistical measures have been put in place to ensure a seamless convocation, according to Professor Eunice Adeparusi, Chair of the Ceremonials Committee.
