AAUA Lecturers Threaten To Disrupt Students Resumption Over Unpaid Salaries
Lecturers at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, have vowed to disrupt students’ resumption and the institution’s forthcoming convocation over unpaid salary arrears, deepening the month-long strike that has crippled academic activities on campus.
Academic staff at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), have threatened to block students’ resumption and the upcoming convocation unless their unpaid salaries are settled. The university’s ASUU branch, led by Chairman Boluwaji Oshodi, said lecturers had lost patience after failed attempts to meet with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and lamented the harsh conditions endured by members. The union has been on strike for over a month, halting academic activities. However, Ondo State’s Commissioner for Education, Igbekele Ajibefun, refuted claims of government neglect, stating that the administration has consistently released subventions to AAUA and is engaging the lecturers to resolve the dispute.
The academic staff at the Ondo State-owned Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), have threatened to disrupt the planned resumption of students and the forthcoming convocation if their outstanding salaries are not paid.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) members in the university embarked on strike last month over the non-payment of their salary arrears, a development that has since paralysed academic activities on campus.
The Chairman of university’s branch of ASUU, Boluwaji Oshodi, stated that the lecturers had exercised enough patience over the alleged refusal by the government to address their plight.
“We have been patient and tolerant for a long time, but this time, we won’t be again. Our people have been pushed to the wall.
“We are not seeing any effort that can signal that the state government is ready to do the right thing,” Oshodi said.
The ASUU chairman noted that efforts made by the union to meet with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had been unsuccessful, adding that lecturers had endured harsh conditions, including conducting examinations “on an empty stomach”.

Ondo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Igbekele Ajibefun, while reacting to the threat by ASUU, dismissed claims that the government had abandoned the institution.
The commissioner disclosed that the state government had been engaging with the striking lecturers to resolve the dispute and assured people that the issues would soon be addressed.
According to him, Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration had continued to release monthly subventions to state-owned tertiary institutions, including AAUA, without delay.
