In a significant gesture marking the 50th founders’ anniversary of Government College, Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu inaugurated a state-of-the-art GCI STEM Lab, generously donated and managed by the SAIL Empowerment Foundation, an initiative established by Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru and his wife, Feyisola. This event, which took place in Surulere, Lagos State, highlights the commitment of Abiru, an alumnus of the prestigious institution, to enhance the quality of education in Nigeria.

The inauguration ceremony included the unveiling of several landmark projects facilitated through the office of the Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Notable improvements to the college include the complete rehabilitation of a 700-seater auditorium, the installation of 24 toilets, reconstruction of two large lecture halls, and the establishment of five administrative offices alongside staff rooms and waiting areas.

Senator Abiru, who also served as the chairman of the 50th founder’s day lecture, expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Sanwo-Olu for their roles in promoting quality education. He emphasized that these initiatives are merely the beginning, stating, “Our goal is not confined to Ikorodu or Lagos East. We aim to extend these opportunities to all of Lagos and, eventually, to every corner of Nigeria, ensuring that every child has access to a world-class education that empowers them to dream, innovate, and succeed.”

Reflecting on his own experiences at Government College, Abiru shared, “It was here that I received the foundation for everything I have achieved, both personally and professionally.” He highlighted the importance of restoring pride in public education, addressing the widening gap between public and private schooling in Nigeria.

Abiru reaffirmed his commitment to rebuilding the education system, stating, “Through the SAIL Empowerment Foundation, we’ve established the SAIL Innovation Lab in partnership with Co-Creation Hub. Together, we are providing a state-of-the-art innovation centre that is free for graduates and students, while equipping thousands of teachers with modern teaching methodologies.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by Commissioner of Basic Education Jimoh Alli-Balogun, praised Senator Abiru for his contributions to human capital development. The ceremony also featured the Global President of the Government College Lagos Old Boys Association, Rear Admiral Leye Jaiyeola (retd), who commended Abiru’s efforts alongside other prominent contributors, including Princess (Mrs.) Adejoke Orelope-Adefulure.

The event concluded with a keynote lecture delivered by renowned professor of intellectual property, Professor Bankole Shodipo, SAN, who is also an alumnus of the institution, underscoring the enduring legacy and impact of Government College, Lagos.
