ABU Development Economics Research Group Organizes Endline Workshop on Climate Change and Food Security Research

The Development Economics Research Group (DERG) of the Department of Economics at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) organized an endline dissemination workshop on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, to share findings from their research on advancing local leadership, innovation, and networks.

The workshop, held at the CBN Centre for Economics and Finance, focused heavily on the impact of climate change on food security and the role of agricultural insurance in mitigating risks.

Represented by Professor Sanusi Aliyu Rafindadi, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Advancement, Research, and Innovation, ABU Vice-Chancellor Professor Adamu Ahmed commended the resilience of the research group and the support from the International Centre for Evaluation and Development (ICED). He highlighted the research's  relevance to local and global communities, particularly its focus on climate change and food security—a pressing global problem.

Professor Peter Njiforti, the Principal Investigator of the ALL-IN Project, presented findings arguing that the Sudano-Sahelian zone of Nigeria faces mounting climate challenges that threaten agricultural productivity. The research concluded that mutual weather-index insurance significantly increases farmers' willingness to participate in future Takaful insurance programs.

Dr. Muhammad Kabir Salihu, a Co-Principal Investigator, announced that the research findings would be patented through the National Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC).
