ABUAD Partners Indian Hospital to Enhance Kidney Transplant Services in Nigeria
Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) has partnered with India’s Marengo Asia Healthcare (AMSH) to expand kidney transplant services in Nigeria, aiming to reduce medical tourism by offering advanced healthcare locally.
Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) has entered a two-year partnership with Marengo Asia Healthcare Private Limited (AMSH), a top healthcare provider in India, aimed at expanding kidney transplant services in Nigeria and curbing medical tourism. The agreement marks a significant step towards providing advanced healthcare solutions within the country.
Speaking during a media session in Ado-Ekiti, Dr. Kolawole Ogundipe, the Chief Medical Director of ABUAD Multi-System Hospital, highlighted that the collaboration would allow ABUAD to deliver life-saving care and specialized treatments locally. This development, he noted, will reduce the need for Nigerians to travel abroad for medical care.
Dr. Ogundipe explained that the partnership would elevate the hospital’s achievements in renal care and introduce innovative procedures. The collaboration with Marengo Asia Hospital will include advanced services in Endourology, providing minimally invasive treatments for complex urological conditions, as well as penile implants for erectile dysfunction.
"Our hospital was conducting 10 dialysis sessions per month initially, but we now perform over 400 sessions monthly, demonstrating our growth and capacity,” he said.
Additionally, the CMD announced that the partnership would support Laparoscopic and Advanced Surgical Procedures, covering a wide range of invasive surgeries for various health conditions. ABUAD Multi-System Hospital, which successfully conducted its first kidney transplant in October 2021, aims to enhance its transplant program with the new collaboration.
The newly expanded kidney transplant program is set to commence in January 2025, following recent successes. "In the last 48 hours alone, we completed four successful kidney transplants. This partnership is a monumental step forward, allowing us to offer life-saving care without the need for patients to seek treatment abroad,” Dr. Ogundipe emphasized.
Dr. Rajiv Sood, Chairman of Urology & Renal Transplant at Marengo Asia Hospital, commended ABUAD Founder Aare Afe Babalola for establishing the hospital to meet diverse health needs. He also highlighted ABUAD's 24-hour service as a major reason for choosing the institution for this collaboration, contrasting it with public hospitals that operate on limited hours.
"With this partnership, we aim to upscale the staff and make AMSH a center for medical excellence in Africa," Dr. Sood stated. He further noted that erectile dysfunction is a common issue, affecting approximately 50% of men in Africa due to factors such as psychological conditions, hypertension, diabetes, and sickle cell disease.
