Hauwa’u Bello Tambuwal, a student of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), has made history as the second female to graduate with a First Class in Mathematics, achieving a CGPA of 4.53.
Hauwa’u Bello Tambuwal, a trailblazing female student of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), has etched her name in history by graduating with a First Class in Mathematics. With a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.53, she becomes the second female student to achieve this distinction in the Mathematics Department.
Hauwa’u's passion for Mathematics was evident early in her life. Her academic journey began at the Islamic Education Trust Sokoto, where she earned recognition for her exceptional performance and was appointed Assistant Head Girl before graduating in 2011. She continued her education at Sultan Muhammadu Maccido Institute of Quran and General Studies in 2012, further strengthening her academic foundation.
Her path to academic excellence, however, was not without challenges. Initially aspiring to study Pharmacy at UDUS, she faced a setback that redirected her focus to Mathematics—a field she later embraced wholeheartedly. “I believe Allah had other plans for me, and I had to put in my best,” Hauwa’u shared.
Her resilience was tested during her third year when her grade slipped to a second-class upper. Despite this, she persevered, drawing strength from her parents and mentors. “I almost lost hope due to my poor performance that year, but I worked harder and ended with 4.53 points in my final session,” she recounted.
Beyond academics, Hauwa’u distinguished herself in various competitions. She won a gold medal at the inaugural Sokoto-Kebbi-Zamfara Universities Mathematics Championship (SUMAC-1) in June 2023 and secured third place in the Hizbs Qur’anic Competition while representing the Faculty of Physical and Computing Sciences.
Reflecting on her journey, Hauwa’u attributed her success to unwavering determination and divine grace. “My First Class degree is not just a result of intellectual effort but a testament to the profound grace of the supreme God,” she noted.
Hauwa’u offered words of encouragement to other students: “Adversity is not a barrier to success but a stepping stone to greatness. Embrace challenges, seize growth opportunities, and believe in the power of prayers.”
Her remarkable achievement not only inspires future female scholars in Mathematics but also serves as a beacon of hope for those navigating academic hurdles.
