Achievers University, Owo, has strengthened its commitment to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education by hosting 120 secondary school students from 10 schools across Owo and its environs to mark the 2026 World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development.

Achievers University, Owo, has strengthened its commitment to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education by hosting 120 secondary school students from 10 schools across Owo and its environs to mark the 2026 World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development.

The outreach programme, held on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at the Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed Auditorium, was organized by the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering under the Faculty of Engineering and Technology. It aligns with the global observance of World Engineering Day, an initiative of UNESCO focused on the role of engineering in advancing sustainable development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Participating schools included Imade College, Ijebu Community Grammar School, Leadership Academy, Adeyeri Iyere Comprehensive High School, Living Spring International School, Corpus Christi Catholic College, Owo, Ebenezer International School, Radiant Intellectual College, Foremost Citizens’ Schools, and Adedewe College. Students were accompanied by teachers for a day of academic exposure, career engagement, and practical demonstrations of engineering concepts.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oyesoji Aremu, while welcoming participants, emphasized the importance of early exposure to STEM pathways in shaping future careers. He urged students to begin defining their academic and professional goals early, stressing that clarity and discipline remain key drivers of success in engineering and related fields.

The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Professor A.S. Onawumi, commended the university management for sustained investment in infrastructure and academic development. He reiterated the faculty’s commitment to producing graduates equipped with the technical and innovative skills required in a rapidly evolving technological environment.

Delivering a keynote presentation titled Engineering Careers for Sustainable Development, the Head of the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering, Dr. Babatunde Emmanuel, highlighted emerging opportunities in renewable energy, digital systems, and smart infrastructure. He also outlined the structure of the faculty, which comprises six departments, and noted that students benefit from substantial tuition support, with scholarships covering between 65% and 100% of school fees.

A major highlight of the programme was a guided tour of engineering laboratories and facilities, where students observed live demonstrations and engaged with modern equipment. The experience was described as instrumental in strengthening interest in STEM education and improving career awareness among participants.

Teachers accompanying the students described the initiative as impactful, noting that early exposure to tertiary-level learning environments plays a significant role in shaping informed career decisions.

The outreach is part of Achievers University’s broader strategy to promote STEM advocacy, enhance experiential learning, and contribute to sustainable development through education.
