Achievers University has called for the adoption of emerging technologies to strengthen Nigeria’s security system during the maiden edition of its Faculty of Engineering and Technology Distinguished Personality Lecture.

The lecture, held on April 22, 2026, at the Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed Auditorium of the university, featured engineering scholar Nureni Adedapo Adewole of the University of Ibadan as guest lecturer.

Delivering a lecture titled “Role of Emerging Technology in the Reengineering of Nigeria’s Security Architecture,” Nureni Adedapo Adewole stressed the urgent need for Nigeria to shift from conventional security approaches to technology-driven systems capable of tackling modern security threats.

According to him, technologies such as artificial intelligence, drones, biometrics, and data analytics have become critical tools for intelligence gathering, surveillance, coordination, and rapid response in modern security operations.

He identified major challenges weakening Nigeria’s security framework to include inter-agency rivalry, overlapping responsibilities, inadequate funding, and limited technical capacity.

The professor advocated the establishment of a unified national intelligence command structure to improve coordination among security agencies and facilitate real-time data sharing.

He also emphasised the importance of investing in human capital development, particularly in cybersecurity, digital forensics, software engineering, and other technology-related fields, noting that technological advancement without skilled manpower would remain ineffective.

Declaring the lecture open, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Achievers University, Oyesoji Aremu, commended the Faculty of Engineering and Technology for establishing a platform that promotes intellectual engagement on national development issues.

He reiterated the university’s commitment to producing graduates capable of developing innovative solutions to societal and national challenges.

In his welcome address, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Ayodele Onawumi, described the lecture as a strategic initiative aimed at encouraging practical discussions at the intersection of engineering, policy, innovation, and national security.

The event attracted academics, students, university officials, and invited stakeholders, generating discussions on how universities can contribute to national security through research, innovation, and strategic partnerships.

University authorities stated that the Distinguished Personality Lecture series would continue as a platform for engaging experts and advancing solutions to pressing national issues through academic discourse and policy engagement.
