The call for increased security measures follows the tragic death of a 300-level student, identified as Emmanuel, who was shot by unidentified gunmen at a private student hostel near the campus. This incident has heightened fears among students, who have also reported frequent armed robberies and attacks.
In a letter addressed to the state government, the SUG expressed grave concerns over the deteriorating security situation. The union highlighted the urgent need for more security personnel to be deployed in the university town to curb the rising violence.
“Recent events have turned the Akungba community into a dangerous terrain, a place where armed thieves have had their field day and resorted to butchering students with knives and broken bottles after robbing them. This level of violence is unprecedented and has created an atmosphere of fear and anxiety among students. Many of us can no longer sleep with our two eyes closed; we are left to constantly worry about our safety,” the letter stated.

The SUG called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Ondo State Government, and the Police Commissioner to take decisive action by deploying additional security personnel to the Akungba community. The union believes that an increased security presence would deter criminal activities and provide much-needed reassurance to students and residents.
Furthermore, the SUG emphasized the importance of cooperation from the host community in addressing these security challenges. They proposed a security dialogue between the host community and the state to develop a coordinated response to the ongoing threats.
