Ahmadu Bello University Zaria Cut Off from Power Grid Due to Unpaid Electricity Bills
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria has been disconnected from the grid by Kaduna Electric since November 28, 2024, due to the institution's inability to settle outstanding electricity bills.
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria has been cut off from the national power grid by Kaduna Electric since the evening of Thursday, November 28, 2024, due to unpaid electricity bills. The university revealed that it had been struggling to meet its rising energy costs, which have been exacerbated by an increase in electricity tariffs this year.
Since January 2024, ABU has managed to pay over one billion Naira in electricity bills but has continued to face financial challenges in settling the accrued electricity debt. Despite these efforts, the institution remains unable to pay for its electricity consumption, leading to the current power disconnection, which is impacting essential university functions.
The disconnection follows months of financial difficulty in keeping up with the costs of electricity and diesel used to power university generators. This issue highlights the increasing financial strain on the university as it continues to carry out its statutory functions.
