Following public outcry, the Oyo State Government has finally addressed the tragic incident at Ajayi Crowther University, days after the death of 200-level student Akro Jeffrey Chamuke, who was repotedly beaten to death by his peers in the university campus. 

In response, the Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, through their X handle, appealed for peace and collaboration from all parties involved on Tuesday. As the tension escalates following the student’s tragic death, the government stresses the need for peace while security agencies conduct their investigation.

This information was disclosed in a statement titled, “Ajayi Crowther Crisis: Oyo State Government Calls for Calm.” The State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Salihu Adelabu, stated that efforts are underway to address the issue and called on the university to enhance campus security.

“The Oyo State Government has called for calm among parties involved in the ongoing crisis at Ajayi Crowther University Oyo, while security agencies investigate to determine the cause of the incident for appropriate action. The state government has been in talks with the institution’s management to find lasting solutions to the crisis,” the statement read.

“The administration led by Governor Seyi Makinde is dedicated to creating a peaceful environment for academic excellence; therefore, it is necessary for students to comply with the rules and regulations set by various institution authorities. Students of the institution are advised to avoid activities that could jeopardize their future, but to strive for excellence at all times,” the statement further read.

The commissioner urged the university to bolster campus security and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. “Ajayi Crowther University management has been urged to enhance security within the campus to prevent such an incident from happening again and ensure culprits are brought to justice,” he added.
