AKSU VC Pledges Support for State Labour Unions Ahead of 2026 Workers’ Day

The Vice-Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Professor Otoabasi Akpan, has pledged the University’s support to the State Councils of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) towards the successful celebration of the 2026 Workers’ Day.

‎This assurance was given on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, during a courtesy visit by members of the NLC/TUC 2026 Workers’ Day Planning Committee to the Vice-Chancellor at the University’s Main Campus, Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.

‎In his welcome address, Professor Akpan expressed appreciation to the delegation for the visit and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to supporting the May 1, 2026 Workers’ Day celebration. He emphasised his alignment with the labour movement and assured the unions of continuous support whenever the need arises.

‎Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the Team Lead of the 2026 NLC/TUC Planning Committee and Secretary of the State TUC, Comrade Akanubong Asuquo, thanked the Vice-Chancellor and the University Management for their warm reception and for maintaining a labour-friendly environment.

‎Comrade Asuquo also expressed gratitude to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, for the appointment of Professor Akpan as the substantive Vice-Chancellor. He further commended the Vice-Chancellor for clearing the backlog of convocation ceremonies for graduates, describing it as a commendable achievement.

‎He noted that the purpose of the visit was to solicit the University’s support towards organising a colourful and successful 2026 Workers’ Day celebration. He described the Vice-Chancellor as staff-friendly and emphasised that his leadership has ushered in an era of peace in AKSU, where labour matters are handled with a progressive and inclusive approach.

‎In a vote of thanks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Nkanikpo Ibok, appreciated the union members for the visit and encouraged sustained cooperation between the University and labour unions. He also thanked the Vice-Chancellor and the Management team for granting the audience and reiterated the University’s commitment to maintaining cordial relationships with its workforce.

‎Those present during the visit included Members of the University Management, Representatives of the NLC and TUC, as well as Staff of the Directorate of General Administration and the Directorate of Information, Public Relations, and Protocol.
