Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nse U. Essien, inaugurated the new Students' Union (SU) executive, Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at the Main Campus, Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.

Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nse U. Essien, inaugurated the new Students' Union (SU) executive, Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at the Main Campus, Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.

In his remarks, Vice-Chancellor appreciated the Akwa Ibom State University Electoral Commission Chairman, Dr. Ekom E. Ekpo and other members of the commission for conducting a smooth, free and fair election devoid of rancour, acrimony and litigation. He also thanked the students for the orderly conduct throughout the electioneering process "Election is always won by one person and mostly has a 50-50 chance" he said.

Prof. Essien commended the past executive and parliamentarians for a peaceful and successful tenure. He congratulated the incoming executive and parliamentarians and urged them to buckle up for the task ahead. He also enjoined the unsuccessful candidates in the election to join hands with the winning team.

The Vice-Chancellor further advised the students to work hard and focus on their academic pursuit as this was the primary purpose for their stay in the University. He urged everyone to be security-conscious as they traverse the length and breadth of the campuses. He also intimated the audience that AKSU has been rated the 2nd best University in South-South and 17th in the country.

In his speech, the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Ekom E. Ekpo, thanked the Vice-Chancellor for the opportunity to serve and noted that the commission has been able to conduct the election within one month from the date of inauguration. He acknowledged the immense contributions of the Dean of Students, Chief Security Officer and the Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) towards the success of the election.

Speaking during the occasion, the Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Dominic Ekpo, thanked the University Management and all the students for their support throughout the electioneering process. He noted that particularly, the election was transparent and devoid of rigging as the whole process was visible electronically to participants and monitors.

In his valedictory speech, the outgoing President of the 9th Tehila Republic, Comrade Abasifreke Benson thanked God for sustaining him and members of his executive throughout their tenure in office. He reeled out some of his achievements to include: development of human capacity, revamping of Tehila secretariat, Happy Hour printing and photocopy center, among others.

The newly elected President of the 10th Tehila Republic, Comrade Etimbuk D. Sunday thanked God for the opportunity to serve and promised to leave good legacies. "To my fellow students, I encourage you to be good ambassadors of this great institution, for the world, nation, union have changed and we must change with them," he said. He promised to work with the University Management and opinion leaders to achieve his goals. He made his first request to the Vice-Chancellor to re-open the school portal for more students to pay their school fees before examination starts. This request was graciously granted by the Vice-Chancellor.

Highlight of the event was administration of the Oath of Office and Allegiance by the Oath Commissioner, Barr. Ememobong Ikpatt, formal Inauguration and presentation of official vehicle to the new President by the Vice-Chancellor.

Eno-Ibanga, FNIM who was represented by the Deputy Registrar, Academic Affairs, Mr. Solomon S. Ukpabio; Director, Health Services, Dr. Geoffrey Udoh; Director, Human Resources, Mr. Raphael N. Ukeme; Deputy Registrar and Head, Legal Unit, Barr. Ime Udofa, staff, students and parents.
