Amadeus University Amizi (AUA), a two-year-old private university in Amizi, Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, has recorded a major academic milestone after emerging third overall in the inaugural Virtual Debating Championship organzied under the framework of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The championship, implemented through the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Community Development Service (CDS) initiative, attracted participation from universities across Nigeria and was preceded by an intensive National Debate Training Programme (NDTP).
The virtual competition, conducted using the British Parliamentary debating format, featured 73 universities from the country's six geopolitical zones. Participants engaged in robust discussions on the motion, **“Whether to Ban Political Parties in Nigeria,”** a topic designed to stimulate discourse on governance, national development, and structural reforms.
Amadeus University secured third place through the outstanding performance of two Nursing Science students, Excel Okechukwu and Joyce Ikechi, who reportedly had only two days to prepare for the contest.
The initiative was conceived under the NYSC CDS framework by a corps member serving at the NUC, Jane-Francis Ijeoma Abuta, while technical coordination was provided by Royal Rhetorics (RR).
Thousands of viewers across the country reportedly followed the virtual debate competition. At the end of the championship, Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, emerged overall winner, while the University of Ilorin finished in second place. Amadeus University, Amizi, claimed the third position.

Reacting to the achievement, the Vice-Chancellor of Amadeus University, Prof. Henry Eke, described the success as a testament to the institution's commitment to academic excellence, critical thinking, and intellectual engagement.
He commended the students for their impressive performance and praised the organizers for creating what he described as a world-class debating platform that aligns with international standards.
Also speaking, the university librarian and debate coordinator, Prof. Ngozi Blessing Ukachi, expressed pride in the institution's accomplishment, noting that the university competed favourably against older and more established institutions.
“We are happy that we participated, and with what we achieved, we hope to do better in the future,” she said.
The achievement further highlights the growing reputation of Amadeus University as an emerging center for academic excellence and student development despite its relatively young age.
