Awkuzu Progressive Union Pledges Security, Community Partnership With COOU
The Awkuzu Progressive Union has reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the management of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), particularly in the areas of security and community relations, during a courtesy visit to the institution's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kate Azuka Omenugha.

The delegation visited the Vice-Chancellor on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at the Vice-Chancellor's Conference Room, where they expressed support for her administration and pledged to work closely with the university to ensure a safe and conducive environment for students and staff. Also present at the meeting was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration and Environmental Sustainability, Professor Anselem Nweke.
Introducing the delegation, Mr. Wendell Odutche presented members of the Awkuzu Progressive Union, led by the traditional ruler of Awkuzu Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Professor C. M. Anikweze, the Igwe of Awkuzu.
Speaking during the visit, the President-General of the union, Chief Ogugua Raphael, congratulated Professor Omenugha on her appointment as the fifth substantive Vice-Chancellor of COOU and assured her of the continued support of the Awkuzu community. He stated that the community remains committed to collaborating with the university to strengthen security and safeguard the welfare of students living within Awkuzu.

The Mayor of Oyi Local Government Area, Hon. Emmanuel Nweke, also commended the Vice-Chancellor's leadership, recalling her years as a teacher at Awkuzu Boys Secondary School. He described her as a disciplined administrator whose commitment to excellence has been evident throughout her career, adding that her achievements as former Commissioner for Education and now Vice-Chancellor are a source of pride to the Awkuzu community.
In his remarks, the Igwe of Awkuzu, His Royal Majesty Professor C. M. Anikweze, praised Professor Omenugha's leadership and dedication to the growth of the university. He also reflected on the contributions of the Vice-Chancellor's late father to the Awkuzu community and acknowledged the positive impact of the family during their years in the town.
The traditional ruler presented several concerns and requests to the university management while offering prayers for a successful tenure. As a mark of appreciation and solidarity, the delegation presented the Vice-Chancellor with a giant catfish and tubers of yam in recognition of her service and achievements.
Responding, Professor Omenugha thanked the Awkuzu Progressive Union for its visit, support and goodwill. She expressed appreciation for the kindness shown to her family during their stay in Awkuzu and said she was deeply touched by the tributes paid to her late father.
Addressing security concerns, the Vice-Chancellor emphasised the importance of stronger collaboration between the university, landlords and host communities. She disclosed that the institution has begun a student accommodation audit to identify where students reside and assess the safety of their hostels and lodges.
Professor Omenugha assured the delegation that the issues raised had been noted and pledged to work closely with the Awkuzu community to strengthen the relationship between the university and its host community.

The visit concluded with the presentation of gifts and a group photograph, symbolising the growing partnership between Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University and the Awkuzu community.
