The Vice-Chancellor of Babcock University,Professor Ademola Tayo, has decried the exorbitant electricity tariff being charged to educational institutions, describing it as a major threat to quality education in Nigeria.

Speaking during the Babcock University’s 22nd undergraduate and 13th postgraduate convocation held on Sunday, Prof. Tayo revealed that the institution paid a staggering N300 million in electricity tariff for the month of May.

“I hereby call on the government to reduce electricity tariff. High electricity costs pose a significant threat to quality education in Nigeria. Universities require support for the country’s development. Our university incurred an expense of N300 million in May due to the increased tariff for electricity consumers in Band A,” Prof. Tayo emphasized.

The Vice-Chancellor also expressed delight at the achievements of the graduating students, highlighting that 132 students graduated with first-class honors, while 16 excelled with distinctions in the School of Clinical Sciences. In total,the university produced 2,842 graduates.

Ogun State Governor,Dapo Abiodun, who was present at the convocation, congratulated the graduating students and encouraged them to use their knowledge to serve humanity. He also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to improving infrastructure in public universities.

“Babcock is renowned for community research, producing graduates who are mentally and morally equipped. I am deeply proud of this university’s role in shaping students. This is a gateway to new beginnings, new endeavors; to all graduates, it is a call to serve humanity,” Governor Abiodun said.
