Bank of Ghana Appointed BUK Professor Bashir Aliyu Umar, OON as Chairman of Non-Interest Financial Advisory Council
Professor Bashir Aliyu Umar, OON, is a distinguished Nigerian Islamic scholar, Professor of Hadith, and respected authority in Islamic jurisprudence and finance. He is a Professor in the Department of Islamic Studies and Shari’ah at Bayero University Kano (BUK).
Born into a royal family in Kano State, Professor Bashir initially studied Electrical Engineering before choosing to pursue Islamic scholarship. His academic journey took him to the Islamic University of Madinah, where he obtained his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. degrees in Hadith and Islamic Sciences. He also studied Maliki jurisprudence and Islamic legal theory under renowned scholars.
Over the years, he has emerged as one of Nigeria’s prominent Islamic scholars. He currently serves as President of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) and Chief Imam of Al-Furqan Mosque, Kano, while continuing to teach and mentor students at BUK.

His contributions to Islamic scholarship, jurisprudence, public service, and Islamic finance have earned him national recognition, including the prestigious Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) honour.
His appointment by the Bank of Ghana as Chairman of the Non-Interest Financial Advisory Council adds another significant chapter to his distinguished career and reflects his expertise in Islamic finance and Shari’ah-related matters.
