Bayero University Kano Bans Unrestricted Domestic Animal Rearing on Campus

The Management of Bayero University Kano (BUK) has issued a stern directive prohibiting the unrestricted rearing and roaming of domestic animals within its campuses, citing significant environmental, health, and safety concerns.

In a special bulletin released on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, the University reminded residents of the Staff Quarters across the Old and New Campuses, Zoo Road Staff Quarters, and the School of Continuing Education that strict adherence to housing guidelines is now mandatory.

According to the statement signed by Lamara Garba, Director of Public Affairs, for the Registrar, the rearing of animals is strictly regulated under Sections C.17–C.25 of the Revised Guidelines for Staff Housing Allocation and Maintenance. While a "permitted minimum number" of domestic animals may be kept, owners are legally required to ensure they are properly confined.

The University’s Security Division has been authorized to immediately commence the arrest and impoundment of any stray animals found roaming freely within the campus environment. The management emphasized that allowing animals to stray constitutes a direct violation of established regulations.

Owners of impounded animals will be identified and held accountable under existing residency guidelines. The University warned that it will not hesitate to enforce appropriate sanctions against members who contravene this directive to maintain the hygiene, order, and overall integrity of the campus.

All residents are urged to comply fully with these measures in the collective interest and safety of the University community.
