Be more vigilant, responsive and sensitive - UNILAG VC Prof Ogundipe charges Campus Traders

The VC University of Lagos, Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, has charged Campus Traders to be more vigilant, responsive and sensitive to security concerns.

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, FAS, has urged members of the UNILAG Campus Traders’ Association and other stakeholders in the University to be more vigilant, responsive and sensitive to security concerns.

Prof. Ogundipe stated this on Friday, October 14, 2022 when he received the leadership of the Association led by the Chairman, Mr. Olufemi Agbonaja in his office.  The courtesy visit provided an opportunity for the members of the Association to enumerate their challenges within the University.

The Vice-Chancellor sensitized the traders on the importance of market governance especially through the enforcement of identity cards for easy recognition of members, and warding off security threats on campus.

While alluding to the enormous task the Security Unit of the University continues to grapple particularly in the area of threats from surrounding communities, Prof. Ogundipe charged the food vendors to support the UNILAG Security unit in its intelligence-gathering efforts by divulging information about security threats to the appropriate channels.

While addressing the challenges raised by the campus traders, the Vice-Chancellor reiterated of his commitment to ensuring that the concerns raised are adequately attended to.

The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Professor Musa Obalola who was present during the visit buttressed the need for food vendors to eschew unhygienic practice in its entirety, and ensure that their activities are conducted in line with best standard practices, especially as it relates to sanitation, security and safety.  He noted that there had been cases of food poisoning in the past and warned against future occurrences.  

 Earlier in his remarks, the Association’s Chairman, Mr. Olufemi Agbonaja applauded the Vice-Chancellor for his thoughtfulness and willingness to always ensure a viable and safe environment for the growth of businesses within the Institution.

Mr. Agbonaja revealed that the current industrial action had crippled sales and affected their members, especially in the past months.

Other dignitaries at the courtesy visit were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Research), Prof Bola Oboh; Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Musa Obalola; Head of Properties, Mrs Ayinla and the University’s Chief Security Officer, Mr. Alao.
