Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) has announced the formation of a Cancer Implementation Committee aimed at expediting the establishment of a state-of-the-art cancer treatment center. This move follows the recent launch of a cancer endowment fund, signaling a significant step forward in addressing the cancer care needs of the state.

Dr. Stephen Hwande, Chief Medical Director (CMD) of BSUTH, detailed the committee’s mandate during a press briefing in Makurdi. “The committee has been established to ensure the timely and efficient setup of the cancer center,” Dr. Hwande stated. “Our goal is to coordinate activities, secure the right vendors and equipment, and ensure that all processes meet international standards.”

The committee’s responsibilities include overseeing the selection of quality equipment and vendors, managing the construction and approval processes, and collaborating with various stakeholders to alleviate the financial burden on the government.

Governor Hyacinth Alia’s commitment to improving healthcare in Benue State was acknowledged by Dr. Hwande, who highlighted that the new center will position Benue as a key health tourism destination in Nigeria. “We anticipate that patients from neighboring states such as Taraba, Kogi, and Nasarawa will seek treatment here, contributing to our local economy,” he added.

The project, estimated to cost approximately N10 billion, has already garnered support from various officials and traditional leaders. Dr. Hwande expressed gratitude to Governor Alia, Senator Gabriel Suswam, Senator Akaagerger, and the House of Representatives members for their contributions.
