Bingham University, Karu, is preparing to graduate a total of 1,602 students in its 5th combined convocation ceremony, including 262 doctors and 57 students with first-class honors. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Haruna Ayuba, revealed these details during a pre-convocation press briefing on Tuesday.

Highlighting the achievements of the graduating class, Prof. Ayuba disclosed that the university will be awarding first degrees across various disciplines for both the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions. Among these, 519 students will receive Second Class Upper degrees, 576 will be awarded Second Class Lower, 179 will graduate with Third Class, and nine with Pass degrees. Additionally, 262 students in the Medical and Dental fields will receive unclassified MBBS degrees.

Bingham University is also celebrating a historic achievement, as it will be graduating its first set of PhD students, with 41 doctoral candidates among the 615 postgraduate graduands. The postgraduate cohort includes 155 Academic Master’s degree recipients, 298 Professional Master’s graduates, and 121 Postgraduate Diploma holders.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to academia, the university will honor Professor Yakubu Mela Alhasan with the title of Emeritus Professor. Prof. Ayuba described Alhasan as a distinguished scholar and mentor, with over 30 years of impactful work in teaching, research, and community service. "He has been more than just a teacher; he has been a father, mentor, and inspiration to many," said Ayuba, noting the professor’s influence extends across Nigeria and internationally.

The event, scheduled for the weekend, includes several activities to mark the achievements of the graduates and the university. The convocation lecture, titled "Empowering Graduates as Global Citizens for a Sustainable Future," will be delivered by Prof. King David Terna Yawe, former President of the Nigeria Cancer Society and former President of the West African College of Surgeons. Other celebratory events include a thanksgiving service, a novelty volleyball match, an entrepreneurship fair, and a Vice-Chancellor’s Luncheon.
