Borno State University Organises Workshop On KANURI AJAMI

A one-day sensitization workshop on KANURI AJAMI for students, staff and Islamic scholars in Maiduguri, has been held at the Borno state University.

Organised by the centre for KANURI AJAMI and Qur'anic Studies(CKAQS) of the University, the sensitization workshop is aimed at amongst others awaken the use of AJAMI in teaching and correspondences in KANURI by the KANURI speaking people of Borno state. It has the theme' the importance of KANURI AJAMI studies. 

 Vice Chancellor of BOSU, Professor Umar Kyari Sandabe  in an address of welcome, enjoined participants drawn from within and outside the university to come up with a comprehensive blueprint for the inculcation of AJAMI in all KANURI studies. This he pointed out, will go long way in accommodating not only Orthodox scholars but also tsangaya scholars and students who may not necessarily go through conventional schools. It will also in the long run, assist in curbing incidences of misunderstanding of the glorious Qur'an thereby curbing religious extremism.

 Professor Sandabe commended the Centre for AJAMI for organising the workshop and assured that, such would hold from time to time, so that the purpose of creating the centre, will be achieved. 

Director of the centre for KANURI AJAMI and Qur'anic Studies, BOSU, Dr. Mustapha Mohammed Ali, said, the centre was established to amongst others, promote writing of KANURI alphabet in Ajami for the understanding of both conventional and non conventional students and scholars, hence the invitation to KANURI scholars in Maiduguri. 

He said, it is hoped that in the not distant future, a KANURI AJAMI calligraphy, will be developed for use in the state and beyond. 

Several papers on the origin and development of KANURI AJAMI form of writing, the importance of KANURI AJAMI studies and Digitisation of KANURI AJAMI were presented by scholars. 

The occasion was attended by Ulamas including the chief Imam of Borno, Imam Laisu Ibrahim Ahmed, Islamic scholars and students.
