COOU Postgraduate School Holds Capacity-Building Workshop on Research Methodology and Results Interpretation

The School of Postgraduate Studies, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, organised a one-day capacity-building workshop for postgraduate students and lecturers, focusing on research methodology, results presentation and interpretation.

The workshop, themed “Equipping Postgraduate Students on How to Write Methodology, Present Results and Interpretation of Results of the Dissertation/Thesis,” was held simultaneously at the University’s Uli and Igbariam Campuses, bringing together postgraduate students and academic staff from various disciplines.

At the Uli Campus, participating faculties included Physical Sciences; Natural and Basic Medical Sciences; and Engineering and Environmental Sciences. The Igbariam Campus hosted participants from Agriculture; Education; Management Sciences; Law; Pharmacy; and Social Sciences.

According to the Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Osita Chiaghanam, the faculty-based structure was designed to address methodological issues peculiar to the different disciplines.

Speaking on the workshop, Prof. Chiaghanam said the initiative was deliberately focused on strengthening students’ capacity to properly develop their research methodology, present findings and interpret results.

He noted that these components are essential to producing research capable of making meaningful contributions to knowledge.

The Dean explained that the University was moving beyond a culture in which dissertations and theses are merely completed, stored or published, towards a research culture focused on solving problems, providing practical solutions and producing outcomes with marketable value.

According to him, the initiative is also aimed at ensuring that postgraduate students develop a thorough understanding of their research before graduation.

He emphasised that students should be able to confidently defend their work, explain their methodology and demonstrate ownership of their research, rather than simply appear before a panel to present their studies without an in-depth understanding of the work.

Prof. Chiaghanam further disclosed that the workshop was being conducted simultaneously across the University for the first time, with sessions organised at the faculty level to accommodate the peculiarities of different disciplines.

He added that the School plans to deepen the initiative in the future by organising similar capacity-building programmes at the departmental level.

The Dean described the workshop as part of the School’s deliberate contribution to the Vice-Chancellor’s vision of enhancing the University’s Values, Viability and Visibility, particularly through research that addresses societal problems, has practical and marketable relevance, and projects the image of COOU.

He expressed satisfaction with the encouraging turnout and enthusiasm demonstrated by participants, adding that attendance was being documented to guide the School’s subsequent actions and interventions.

Prof. Chiaghanam reiterated that the era of postgraduate research being treated merely as a requirement for graduation is giving way to a more rigorous culture of scholarship.

He said postgraduate students are expected to understand, defend and demonstrate the relevance of their research, noting that the workshop represents a strategic step towards producing postgraduate scholars whose work contributes meaningfully to knowledge, society and the development of the University.
