Delta State University Congregation Elects Monday Izu to Governing Council
The Congregation of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has elected Comrade Monday Izu as the new representative of non-academic staff to the institution’s Governing Council.
The Congregation of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has elected Comrade Monday Izu as the new representative of non-academic staff to the institution’s Governing Council.
The election, which held on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the 750 Lecture Theatre A, Site III, was a tightly contested process between Mr. Izu and Mr. Emuakpo Ekuerhare. At the end of voting, Mr. Izu polled 395 votes to edge past Mr. Ekuerhare, who secured 385 votes.

Before the election, Chairman of Congregation and Vice Chancellor of DELSU, Professor Samuel Ogheneovo Asagba, addressed members on recent developments within the university. He explained that management, working with staff unions, was engaging the Delta State Government on the payment of outstanding arrears and urged members to remain patient and hopeful.
Professor Asagba also outlined several infrastructural and administrative initiatives under his leadership. These included plans for new car parks to improve traffic flow on campus, completion of the road leading to the Faculty of Arts, acquisition of additional computers for the University Exam Centre, and the refurbishment and upgrade of internet facilities at the centre to expand its capacity for JAMB CBT examinations. He further announced the computerisation of the university staff directory, plans to digitalise promotions and appraisals, improved student screening, adoption of a more reliable internet provider for staff and students, and a partnership with MTN to strengthen campus telecommunications.

He assured members of his administration’s continued commitment to staff welfare and the overall growth of the institution.

The Congregation meeting was attended by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Edmund Atakpo; Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Hilary Owamah; Provost of Oleh Campus, Professor Elo Ibagere; Registrar of the University, Mrs. Rufina Ufiofio; University Bursar, Mrs. Otimeyin Ekakitie-Omajuwa; University Librarian, Dr. Josephine Eruterio Onohwakpor; along with academic staff and qualified administrative staff of the university.

Speaking after the meeting, Dr. Ese Umukoro, Deputy Director of the Directorate of Corporate Affairs, Public Relations and Information (DCIPR), described the election as a reflection of DELSU’s democratic values and a significant step in ensuring that non-academic staff have a strong voice in council deliberations.
