Ammies Stewart, a resilient 50-year-old mother of three and elementary teacher in Jackson Public Schools, has defied the challenges of a Lupus diagnosis to achieve an exceptional 97% grade point, successfully graduating from Jackson State University (JSU), United States.

Amidst her responsibilities as a teacher, mother, and a Lupus patient, Ammies demonstrated extraordinary perseverance and commitment. Graduating from JSU's Mississippi Teacher Residency (MTR) Program with a remarkable 3.90 grade point average, she shared her excitement about the graduation, emphasizing the triumph of joy in her journey.

“I’ve already picked out my outfit for graduation. My thing is to step, but I’m stepping with knowing that I did this. I’m stepping knowing that God was there. “I trusted Him and trusted His plan. I kept going. I’m stepping for my children. I’m stepping for my students. I’m stepping for the mothers and fathers who wanted to step but couldn’t step,” she expressed.

Ammies commenced her college journey in 1997, but she temporarily paused her academics to care for her children. She later graduated from Tougaloo College, Mississippi, with two associate’s degrees, one in early childhood and the other in childhood development. Despite facing the challenges of Lupus flare-ups—characterized by extreme tiredness, fatigue, and chronic pain—Ammies persisted.

Her Lupus diagnosis, received in May 2022, did not deter her determination. Ammies believes her journey with Lupus serves as an inspiration to others, stating, “I know when to throw in the towel, but sometimes it’s not about throwing in that towel. Take that towel and wipe these tears with it because I cry and all that kind of stuff sometimes, but with that being said, I can say I did it.”

Ammies credits her stable support system, including family, friends, church members, coworkers, and neighbors, for assisting her throughout this academic journey. She finds strength in affirmations, moments of respite, and the scripture Romans 8:37.
