Don Advocates for Inclusion of Monotechnics in TETFUND Beneficiaries
Dr. Ibrahim Lawal, Provost of the Federal College of Forestry, Ibadan, has called for the inclusion of monotechnics as beneficiaries of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) to support research and infrastructure development in Nigeria.
Dr. Ibrahim Lawal, the Provost of the Federal College of Forestry, Ibadan, has urged the Nigerian government to include monotechnics as beneficiaries of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) to enhance research and infrastructure development in the country.
Addressing journalists during the 85th anniversary and the 76th-83rd combined convocation ceremony of the college, Lawal emphasized the inequity of excluding monotechnics from TETFUND support. He stated that providing adequate funding to these institutions could significantly address pressing issues in the health sector.
Lawal highlighted that the Federal College of Forestry, Ibadan, has initiated courses aimed at tackling terminal illnesses and environmental challenges. He pointed out that the introduction of programs in Bio-Science, Indigenous Knowledge Science, and Bio-Technology aligns with current needs and will empower students to explore the potential of herbal medicine.
“There is a need for the federal government to enlist monotechnics as beneficiaries of TETFUND. With monotechnics receiving support, we can offer our children a quality education similar to that provided in our college, which is pivotal in addressing environmental issues in Nigeria,” Lawal stated.
He noted that the institution is training students not only to understand the significance of herbal medicine but also to engage with societal health needs. He added, “Investment in further research on herbal medicine will alleviate the high costs of conventional drugs in our communities.”
Lawal also discussed the college's commitment to environmental sustainability, mentioning ongoing research to combat climate change and mitigate flooding and deforestation.
During the convocation ceremony, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, recognized for his contributions to forestry, is scheduled to deliver the anniversary lecture titled “85th Year of Nurturing Nature: The Legacy and Future of Forestry Education in Nigeria.” The event, which started with a Jumat service last Friday, will include a range of activities such as departmental exhibitions and a novelty match, culminating in the convocation and fundraising ceremony on Thursday.
“We certainly have every cause to celebrate the college in its 85 years of existence. We will welcome many distinguished personalities who understand and appreciate the importance of preserving our forests and the environment,” Lawal concluded.
