Driver Apprehended for Reckless Driving in Fatal OAU Student Accident
The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has announced that the driver responsible for the death of a final-year student has been handed over to the Nigeria Police for prosecution. The student, Esu Rita Ema, from the Foreign Language Department, was killed while attempting to cross the Ife-Ibadan expressway on her way to submit her project.
According to a press statement by the university spokesperson, Olarewaju Abiodun, Esu was struck by a Lexus car driven by Lasisi Sodiq Segun, with Abuja registration number ABJ427LQ. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) recovered her body and deposited it at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC) around 12:35 p.m.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, expressed his condolences to Esu’s family through the Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Adeolu Odedire. Professor Bamire, visibly devastated, emphasized the profound loss of a promising young adult and urged the family and friends to find solace in God, hoping for the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
