DUFUTH Adds Three Electric Ambulances to Strengthen Emergency Response and Cut Operating Costs

David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH) has expanded its emergency care capacity with the acquisition of three new electric ambulances, reinforcing both its patient response capability and commitment to environmentally sustainable healthcare delivery.

The vehicles, procured to support emergency patient evacuation, intra-hospital transfers and movement to satellite centres, were formally received by the Chief Medical Director, Professor Uzoma Agwu.

Speaking during her maiden interview at the newly established DUFUTH Media Studio, Prof. Agwu confirmed that the electric ambulances will significantly reduce fuel expenditure, lower carbon emissions and improve air quality within the hospital environment.

She disclosed that two of the ambulances have been deployed to high-traffic emergency zones, including the Accident and Emergency Unit and the main hospital entrance, while the third unit is positioned within the hospital complex for inter-departmental patient transfers.

The CMD explained that the vehicles will also be used to convey patients to specialised satellite facilities such as the Renal Centre, Eye Centre and Oncology Centre, improving turnaround time and continuity of care.

According to her, beyond their environmental advantage, the ambulances offer lower patient transport costs, easier access for patients, and faster loading and unloading, making them particularly suited for emergency and clinical operations.

Prof. Agwu further clarified that the ambulances were fully captured in the 2025 capital budget and delivered by the contractor as scheduled, dismissing speculation of fund diversion that had followed delays in the release of the 2025 appropriation.

The deployment of the electric ambulances marks another strategic step in DUFUTH’s drive to modernise its emergency infrastructure, improve patient experience and operate on a more cost-efficient and sustainable platform.
