Speaking on “Clean Energy Initiatives: A Path to Renewable Energy Sustainability,” O’Deji urged Nigeria's youth to seize the significant opportunities in the renewable energy sector to address the nation's energy challenges while also creating career prospects for themselves. He emphasized that with 65% of Nigeria's population under the age of 25, the youth have a crucial role to play in solving the country's energy issues.
O’Deji highlighted the current energy situation in Nigeria, noting that the country’s power generation is under 4,000MW, well below its installed capacity of 12,000MW. He attributed the shortfall to issues such as vandalism, inefficiency, and insecurity. He called for balancing energy security, equity, and sustainability to meet the energy needs of the Nigerian populace.
Addressing FUTA students, O’Deji stressed the importance of combining academic knowledge with practical skills. He encouraged them to build strong networks and focus on developing sellable skills alongside their studies. "Good grades are important, but practical skills are even more critical for future success," he said.
The lecture also covered the evolution of Nigeria's energy sector, from its early days of unregulated needs to recent developments including liberalization, the establishment of Independent Power Projects, and advancements in clean energy technologies. O’Deji proposed that FUTA could leverage these advancements by setting up its own microgrid to address both its needs and those of nearby communities.
In her opening remarks, Professor Adenike Oladiji, represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Professor Taiwo Amos, emphasized the importance of transitioning to renewable energy sources to protect the environment and ensure sustainable energy availability. She highlighted the need to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and address Nigeria's significant energy deficit.
Dean of the School of Physical Sciences, Professor Barnabas Adebola, praised the choice of the lecture topic and speaker, describing O’Deji as a visionary leader committed to sustainable energy solutions. Special Recognition Awards were presented to past Deans and individuals who have significantly contributed to the development of education and the School.
The event was well-received by students and faculty, who appreciated the insights provided by O’Deji and the recognition of outstanding contributions to the field.
