University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative (ASR Africa) officially commenced the construction of the ASR-BUA Biological Laboratory Complex on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. The groundbreaking ceremony was led by UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, and ASR Africa CEO, Dr. Ubon Udoh.

Located near the UNILAG Botanical Gardens, the state-of-the-art facility will feature two laboratory wings on two floors, complete with offices, workstations, storage spaces, and research amenities. The first phase includes plans for pens, cages, and nurseries for diverse plant and animal species to enhance education and research.

Professor Ogunsola highlighted the project’s transformative potential for research in natural sciences, biotechnology, and urban agriculture, underscoring its contribution to food security and the development of biotechnological products. She also praised her predecessor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, for initiating the project, noting UNILAG’s tradition of leadership continuity.

Dr. Udoh reaffirmed ASR Africa’s dedication to societal impact, citing its $100 million annual pledge to health, education, and development initiatives across Africa. He lauded the project’s user-centric design and pledged ongoing support for educational advancements.

The ceremony included goodwill messages, a block-laying event, and a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor’s office by the ASR Africa team. Established in 2021, ASR Africa continues to drive innovative, sustainable solutions for Africa’s developmental challenges.
