The journey for the establishment of the College of Medicine started with the proposal by the Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke to mount the College of Medicine in the university and this received the approval of the senate.
Upon receiving the approval, a formal request for the approval of the Medicine and Surgery programme under a college of medicine was sent to the National Universities Commission. The application invited the NUC for a resource assessment visit to the programme.
The application, which received a positive response, saw the successful resource assessment visit of the NUC and this birthed the subsequent NUC approval of the full-time mode of the programme.
The Godfrey Okoye University College of Medicine was then founded on 6 October 2022 with the approval of the National Universities Commission.
The mounting of the College of Medicine by the Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke is in line with the strategic goal that the College of Medicine is included in the universities third stage of development.
The college is a modern wonder which comprises both natural and architectural wonders equipped with standard classrooms, laboratories, and hostels. A breezy groove looks out on the lake and plenty of green spaces for the students to kick back in.
The college is located on the universities main campus at Ugwuomu Nike.
The College aims to provide students with a broad and balanced foundation of sound scientific and professional platforms for producing medical doctors who can work anywhere in Nigeria and be acceptable to the international community.
The college consists of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences which has the Department of Anatomy, Physiology, and Medical Biochemistry; the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences which has the Department of Anatomical Pathology, Chemical Pathology, Haematology/ Immunology, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology & Therapeutics; the Faculty of Clinical Medicine which has the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Community Medicine & Primary Health Care, Internal Medicine and Surgery.
The renowned Prof. Dr. Frank Akpuaka is the Provost of the College of Medicine, while his deputy is Prof. Dr. Marian Unachukwu.
The college is filled with renowned consultants and learned and exposed lecturers who are happy to render their services to the university with the location of the college being within their reach.
The college also has visiting professors and lecturers from Austria like Prof. Peter Neuner who lectures Anatomy and Physiology in the college.
The takeover of the Catholic hospital – Ntasi Obi Ndinonafufu Catholic Hospital for students’ clinical posting has been granted and as such the hospital is renamed Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital (Ntasi Obi).
The minimum Jamb score for the programme is 230.
