Federal College of Education Zaria's School of Secondary Arts and Social Sciences Education Holds 16th Annual Conference

The School of Secondary Arts and Social Sciences Education held the opening session of its 16th Annual Conference today at the A.A Ladan Hall. 

Dr. Khalil Yusuf Uthman, Dean of the School, introduced the theme, "Poverty and Insecurity: Challenges to Education and National Development in Nigeria," aimed at addressing pressing issues in contemporary Nigerian society. He encouraged attendees to engage with an open mind and commit to meaningful discussions.

Dr. Ibrahim Aliyu delivered the keynote address, detailing the severe impact of poverty, noting that 83 million Nigerians live below the standard of living, with 70 million in extreme poverty. He highlighted how banditry has supplanted governmental authority in some areas, deepening terrorism issues.

Prof. Isah Mohammed Abbas, HOD of Political Science at ABU Zaria, discussed how terrorism stems from state failure and its disruptive effects on education and economic development. He attributed this to political competition, ethnic and religious conflicts, and poor governance, calling for a proactive approach to counter-terrorism.

Prof. Aliyu Sanusi Rafindadi, HOD of Economics at ABU Zaria, represented by Dr. Jamilu Ilyasu, also addressed the failures in addressing poverty and security issues. He proposed solutions to avoid further deterioration and foster educational development.

In his goodwill message, Hon. Suleiman Wakili, PDP Chairmanship aspirant for Zaria local government, urged participants to draw lessons from current experiences and support politicians with proven track records.

Local organizing committee chairman, Mal. Shuaibu Yusuf Umar, expressed gratitude to the Provost and his team for their support in hosting the conference and thanked all dignitaries and committee members for their efforts.

The event was attended by Deans, Heads of Units, representatives from the Army School of Infantry, Road Safety Corp, and the press.
