Federal Government Takes Over Nok University, Renames It Federal University of Applied Science, Kachia
The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken over Nok University, Kachia, Kaduna State, after a court ruled that its founder, Chief Anthony Hassan, used illicit public funds to establish it.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially taken over Nok University, Kachia, Kaduna State, following a court ruling that the institution was established with illicit public funds. The institution has been renamed the Federal University of Applied Science, Kachia, Kaduna State.
The decision came after a Federal High Court issued a final forfeiture order in 2024, declaring that the funds used to establish the university were illegally acquired. On March 7, 2025, the Kaduna State government formally handed over the university's documents to the Minister of Education, marking the official transition to federal ownership.
Chief Anthony Hassan, an indigene of Nok village, originally founded the university to honor the historical and cultural significance of the Nok civilization. However, investigations revealed that Hassan, who previously held the position of Director of Finance and Accounts in the Federal Ministry of Health, used misappropriated public funds to establish the institution.
As part of the federal government’s takeover, all properties and assets of the university have been transferred, including academic buildings, a water factory, an international hotel, and an event center.
Nok village, located in Kachia, Kaduna State, is renowned for its ancient terracotta figurines, which are among the earliest known examples of African art. Recognizing its historical significance, UNESCO has been working on conservation plans to preserve the village’s cultural and archaeological heritage.
The transition of Nok University into a federal institution aligns with the government's efforts to ensure transparency in educational investments while expanding access to quality higher education in Nigeria.
